All of the above? Its important to assess how much of the role is writing, community management or planning and strategy, says Amy Mangan, vice president and division director at The Creative Group in Atlanta. Understanding ahead of time the core of what you need this person to do day to day will help ensure you find a social media manager candidate that meets all of your business needs.Look for these skills and experienceKeep in min d that social media is still a relatively new field. While there are certain skills to look for on paper, relevant experience should count for a lot in your final evaluation.Generally speaking, a candidate should have at least three years of experience in social media marketing and management, coupled with a degree in marketing, communications, business or a related field.Companies are increasingly using data to inform business decisions and marketing strategy, so an applicant with a proven ability to interpret data and adjust strategies accordingly will give you a competitive edge.Of course, you should look for experience with familiar social media networks, but also scan for candidates who are comfortable using industry standard tools, like Google Analytics, Klear, Buffer and Hootsuite. Push for specific examples of past campaigns that were successful - and unsuccessful. Ask what they learned throughout the process.Use a variety of social media manager interview question types to draw out different kinds of information. For example, hypothetical questions may help you predict how a candidate will react in certain situations, while off-the-wall questions will help you get to know their personality.Looking for more specific questions? Alex Kreutler, TCG division director in Dublin, Ohio, suggests asking the following social media interview questions to candidatesWhat strategies have you used in the past to generate leads?Tell me about your knowledge of SEO and its relationship with social mediaWhich social media tools do you use or have you used in the past?Which is y our favorite and why? What do you believe are relevant metrics for tracking ROI on social media? How do you deal with negative comments of a brand reputation crisis?Zimmer notes that he likes to ask candidates which brands on social media the candidate admires and why. The answer can provide insights about what they think is important in social media marketing, and how they might behave in the role if hired, he says.Adds Zimmer Social media evolves at an incredible pace, so it requires practitioners who have not just a tolerance for change but rather an excitement about the opportunities change offers. To determine which camp they are in, ask them to talk about a time when they needed to adapt to a social media change and did so successfully. Finally, ask about their preferred work environment and arrangements. This can help you determine how well they will fit in with your current staff and mesh with your companys culture. These questions can be invaluable in avoiding bad hires.Do so me extra diggingPrior to bringing candidates in, take a look at their personal social media profiles. After all, if theyre going to be in dienstgrad of your companys accounts, they should be active on their own across a variety of channels. Look for candidates who utilize a range of networks and whose profiles are impressive, current and well maintained.Offer the right compensationThe unemployment rate for social media managers is at an all-time low right now, so its best to start with a competitive rate for your location, Mangan says. Social media managers have highly in-demand skill sets and if you find the right person, you should act quickly and make a competitive offer. If you dont move fast enough, you risk losing the candidate and wasting precious time and resources in a lengthy interview process, or, worse, a failed search. The midpoint salary for a social media manager in the United States is $57,750, according to The Creative Group 2019 Salary Guide. Candidates with extensi ve skills and experience, or those working for large agencies in urban areas, may earn up to $98,250. When it comes to closing the deal with your preferred candidate, salary is key.VIEW ur SALARY CALCULATORIf you dont have the budget to be flexible on salary, you may need to consider offering more nonmonetary benefits to attract skilled candidates. Sometimes, unique perks and incentives can make up for a slightly lower salary. If your company offers flexible work arrangements, additional vacation time or attractive extras like free gym memberships, advertise them. Many candidates are looking beyond salary when making decisions, especially if theyre entertaining multiple offers.

Biggest Interview Mistakes Recent College Grads Make

Biggest Interview Mistakes Recent College Grads MakeBiggest Interview Mistakes Recent College Grads MakeRecent grads, get ahead of the curve by avoiding these interview mistakes. You have the education and that very important piece of paper. Now are you ready to put that knowledge into action and find a job in your field? If you are new to the professional world of job seeking it can be a daunting task to create the resume, ace the interview, and get the job. Whether youve had your fair share of experience interviewing while in college or you are entirely new to the process, it can be easy to slip up and make a mistake. These are mistakes that you should avoid at all costs during an interview.Relying on your college accomplishments. If you are a recent college grad you may be keen to talk up your accolades during your college years. However, hiring managers who have been in the industry for a while may bedrngnis be impressed with good grades, extracurricular activities, and courses ta ken. They want to see that youve taken the steps to gain real-world experience in your field. Even if you dont have much experience outside of college, focus on the experiences that you can relate over to the working world.Being a know-it-all. Youre a recent graduate- employers do leid expect you to know absolutely everything about the industry. In fact, acting this way will mostly come off as fake and cocky, something that will hurt you during an interview. Instead, showcase the knowledge that you do know and let the hiring manger know that you are willing to learn and evolve with the industry.Being ignorant about the company. If you are new to the interview process then you might not realize that its not just about your skills in the industry. Not only do you have to prove you are capable of doing the job, but you have to show you are knowledgeable about that specific company. Learn about the companys goals and past achievements. It also doesnt hurt to research who runs the compan y and who will be interviewing you, if possible. If you show up to the interview without this knowledge, you are severely limiting your chances of landing the job.Asking about salary. You should not mention pay during an interview- the company has not even decided if theyd like to hire you or not. Salary should not even be mentioned during the first interview unless the interviewer brings it up. A company wants to see that you are interested in the job and are capable of doing it- they arent searching for someone who wants the highest pay and best benefits. Otherwise, you would be willing to work for any company. Not considering references. Your references should not be an afterthought. In fact, besides the interview, they may be the most important part of getting the job. First off, find references that have good things to say about you. Do not include references from past jobs where youve had bad experiences or left in an undesirable situation. You should also ask permission and g ive a heads-up to references before listing them as so. If a potential employer calls a reference who is unsuspecting, it will look unprofessional.Forgetting to prepare questions. When you are in an interview, at some point the interviewer will ask if you have any questions. The worst thing you can do in this scenario is not ask any questions or just make up questions on the spot. The interviewer wants to see that youve put thought into meaningful questions and that youve done your research on the company. Refrain from overly personal questions- keep it professional. Ask about company procedures or what a typical day working for the employer would look like.Having a less than stellar online persona. Surprisngly enough, your social media accounts, blogs, websites, etc. can make or break you when it comes to finding a job. You can be sure that employers are looking you up before they offer you that job. Anything not suited for the work environment pictures from parties, unprofessiona l language, etc. could be whats keeping you from that job offer. Make sure that anything you make public on social media is something you wouldnt mind a hiring manager seeing.Failing to follow-up. One of the most important aspects of the interview that college grads may not know about is the follow-up. This is post-interview, but it could make the difference between getting the job or being forgotten. Following up could be simply sending a quick personal note to the interviewer, thanking them for their time and reassuring your interest in the position. This shows courtesy as well as reminding the interviewer of who you are and what you want.Taking the first offer that comes along. With being a new grad, you cant afford to be super picky. But that doesnt mean you have to accept the first offer that is put on your lap. When offered a position, think long and hard about what types of opportunity you have for advancement. Will these be a position where you can develop your skills and g o farther? The belastung thing you want is a position where you will remain static for years to come.

How to Deal With a Job You Hate

How to Deal With a Job You HateHow to Deal With a Job You HateMake the Most of It What to Do When You Hate Your JobA glass half full mentality can make all the difference. The economy has been steadily recovering since the 2008 recession, but we arent out of the woods yet. With employment opportunities still limited, the competition in the job market is fierce. Getting a paying job is leid a sure thing. Knowing this, the focus of many professionals has shifted away from finding a career you love to taking the job you can get. However, that does not mean you have to give up the hope of building a highly fulfilling and enjoyable career you love. More than anything, this economy stresses the importance of making job decisions that help you find your career path instead of landing you directly to the highly lucrative and exciting destination. How do you set yourself up for success while still showing up at a job that does not exactly light you up? Here are five ideas to try. 1. Focus on wh ats right in your jobLets be honest every job has its pluses and minuses. No matter where you find yourself, there will always be tasks, people, and pressures that you dont enjoy. Instead of zooming in on the negative factors, make a conscious decision to focus on whats right. How do you do that when a day at the office looks like an endless stretch of drudgery? By going back to why you accepted this job in the first place. Perhaps it was the pay, the easy commute, the opportunity to work with people you enjoy, or the chance to get some experience in your professional field. Regardless of what your personal reasons were, revisit them and find a way to remind yourself of them daily.Challenge yourself to actively look for things at work that make you smile, get you excited, or bring you joy. A weekly sushi lunch out with your co-worker? Excellent coffee in the office? A sense of accomplishment when a report is done? Set a goal of finding at least three things for which you are gratefu l at work every day perhaps try writing them down to keep yourself accountable. This exercise may look simple, but it can do wonders for turning your attitude around.2. Fix what can be fixedA proactive focus on whats right does not mean you must pretend that everything at work is rosy. Be honest with yourself about whats not working for you. Do you have a hard time concentrating in a noisy cubicle? Does the repetitive nature of your tasks make you want to climb the walls? Does your boss seem unappreciative or unreasonable?Make a list of things, people, and tasks that you dont enjoy, then look at each eintrag to determine whether something can be done about it. Is there a way to create templates, automate, or somehow optimize the tasks that are boring and repetitive? Could you ask to be relocated to another cubicle away from noisy neighbors or sell your manager on the idea of working remotely for a portion of the week? Are there professionals who have a good relationship with your bo ss? If so, what are they doing differently from you?If a pain point does not seem to have an immediate solution within your reach, acknowledge it and work on ways to minimize its impact on your day. Stay away from negative co-workers, find a great soundtrack to make stuffing envelopes go quicker, and create bright spots in the day that you can look forward to like chocolate cookies after a particularly painful meeting or a nice plant for your desk.RelatedHow to Stay Motivated at Work3. Clarify your career pathJust because you have this job today does not mean you are stuck here for the rest of your working life. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a typical professional changes an average of 11 or more jobs over the course of their career, so learn to view any position as a step along your path. This gets easier if you know where you want to go.Begin with getting some clarity around your career goals, and then determine what you are willing to give up in exchange for what y ou want. For example, some professionals may consciously choose to grit their teeth through a high-intensity or high-pressure job so that they can have more options or boost their earning potential with two to three years of highly valuable experience under their belts.4. Actively seek out job opportunitiesHaving goals is helpful, but moving up and finding a career that you love takes knocking on many doors and being ready for job opportunities when they arise. The more proactive you are in networking with other professionals, volunteering, taking on different responsibilities, and trying new things, the greater your chances of landing a job that you love.5. Keep a clear headThe fruchtwein difficult thing about holding down a job you dont love is not sabotaging yourself in the process the temptation to slack off, mutter a snarky comment, or just throw in a towel can be strong. Be clear on your personal do not cross lines, avoid situations that turn abusive or unethical, and know wh at it would take for you to leave. Short of those boundaries, keep your eye on the ball and remember that this job is just a stepping stone.Sometimes difficult jobs offer the best learning opportunities. To make the most of a job you dont love, consider applying a lesson from the organizing master Marie Kondo begin with gratitude. After all, you are getting something out of having this position A paycheck can allow you to have financial independence, buy things that bring you joy, or build up a financial reserve that will serve as a bridge to your next job opportunity. Plus, a job with boring and repetitive tasks might teach you how much you value the ability to be creative and the opportunity to solve a tough puzzle. A job you dont love may also prove to be a powerful motivator and catalyst for change. No matter what your job situation is, find ways to be thankful for what it gives you. 5 choices youll regret forever

5 choices youll regret forever5 choices youll regret foreverOur days are filled with a constant stream of decisions. Most are mundane, but some are so important that they can haunt you for the rest of your life.A recent study from Columbia University found that were bogged down by more than 70 decisions a day. The sheer number of decisions we have to make each day leads to a phenomenon called decision fatigue, whereby your brain actually tires like a muscle.A new study from the University of Texas shows that even when our brains arent tired, they can make it very difficult for us to make good decisions. When making a decision, instead of referencing the knowledge weve accumulated, our brains focus on specific, detailed memories. For example, if youre buying a new car and trying to decide if you should go for the leather seats, even though you know you cant afford it, your brain might focus on memories of the wonderful smell and feel of the leather seats in your brothers sports car, wh en it should be focused on the misery youre going to experience when making your monthly car payments. Since you dont have memories of this yet, its a hard thing for your brain to contemplate.I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions. Stephen CoveySome decisions are minor, such as what to eat, which route to drive to work, or in what order to tackle tasks others are more difficult, such as choosing between two job offers, whether to move to a new city for someone you love, or whether to cut a toxic person out of your life. Regardless of the magnitude of the decision, our brains make it hard for us to keep the perspective we need to make good choices.Bronnie Ware spent her career as a palliative care nurse, working exclusively with people who were 3 to 12 months from death. She made a habit of asking them about their greatest regrets, and she heard the same five regrets time and time again. By studying these regrets, you can make certain that you make goo d choices and dont fall victim to them yourself. They wish they hadnt made decisions based on what other people thinkWhen you make your decisions based on other peoples opinions, two things tend to happenYou make a poor career choiceThere are too many people out there who studied for a degree they regret or even spent their lives pursuing a career they regret. Whether youre seeking parental approval or pursuing pay and prestige over passion, making a poor career choice is a decision that will live with you forever. You fail to uphold your moralsWhen you get too caught up in what your boss thinks of you, how much money you think your spouse needs to be happy, or how badeanstalt you will look if you fail, you are at high risk of violating your own morals. Your intense desire to make yourselflook goodcompromises your ability to stay true to yourself and, ultimately, tofeel good. The best way to avoid falling prey to the opinions of others is to realize that other peoples opinions are just that- opinions. Regardless of how great or terrible they think you are, thats only their opinion. Your true self-worth comes from within. They wish they hadnt worked so hardWorking hard is a great way to impact the world, to learn, to grow, to feel accomplished, and sometimes even to find happiness, but it becomes a problem when you do so at the expense of the people closest to you. Ironically, we often work hard to make money for the people we care about without realizing that they value our company more than money. The key is to find a balance between doing what you love and being with the people you love. Otherwise youll look back one day and wish youd focused more on the latter. They wish they had expressed their feelingsWere taught as children that emotions are dangerous and that they must be bottled up and controlled. This usually works at first, but boxing up your feelings causes them to grow until they erupt. The best thing you can do is to put your feelings directly on the t able. Though its painful to initiate, it forces you to be honest and transparent. For example, if you feel as though you dont make enough money at work, schedule a meeting with your boss and propose why you think youre worth more. As a result, she will either agree with you and give you a raise or disagree and tell you what you do need to do to become more valuable. On the other hand, if you do nothing and let your feelings fester, this will hinder your performance and prevent you from reaching your goal. They wish they had stayed in spur with their friendsWhen you get caught up in your weekly routine, its easy to lose sight of how important people are to you, especially those you have to make time for. Relationships with old friends are among the first things to fall off the table when were busy. This is unfortunate because spending time with friends is a major stress buster. Close friends bring you energy, fresh perspectives, and a sense of belonging, in a way that no one else can.T hey wish they had let themselves be happyWhen your life is about to end, all the difficulties youve faced suddenly become trivial compared to the good times. This is because you realize that, more often than not, suffering is a choice. Unfortunately, most people realize this far too late. Although we all inevitably experience pain, how we react to our pain is completely under our control, as is our ability to experience joy. Learning to laugh, smile, and be happy (especially when stressed) is a challenge at times, but its one thats worth every ounce of effort.Bringing it all togetherSome decisions have repercussions that can last a lifetime. Most of these decisions are made daily, and they require focus and perspective to keep them from haunting you. This article first appeared on LinkedIn.

5 Popular Careers That May Be Extinct in 10 Years

5 Popular Careers That May Be Extinct in 10 Years Globalization, in the guise of off-shoring and outsurcing, has led to dramatic changes in the makeup of the labor market in recent years, and will continue to do so for years to come. But, theres a new player in town that is going to have as big or even a bigger impact on the auf der ganzen welt labor forceand that is computerization/automation and the gradual replacement of human workers by machines. This is not the stuff of Matrix or the Terminator we are not talking extermination, but just the replacement of every day work activities, once performed by humans, by machines. Jobs that exist today, which you might be doing right now, or hiring for now, might not be around tomorrow or perhaps in 10/20 years time. A study from the Oxford Martin School suggests that 47% of US jobs are at risk of being computerized (replaced by robots) to a greater or lesser extent over the next 2 decades. So, the question for candidates and recruiters is will your job or the jobs you recruit for be around in 10 years time? To help answer, below I have outlined five popular careers that wont be around or that may be vastly diminished in the next decade1. Data Entry. This is a career path that workers may need to start parachuting out of in the next 10 years as the Oxford Martin study suggests a 99 percent chance of computerization. Admittedly,DOL data shows that general office clerk jobs are projected to grow at 6 percent over the next 10 years, but this is lower than the average tarif of growth and not really a ringing endorsement. Workopolis has observed a definite decline in data entry jobs. And with nearly 3 million people employed in office admin, you may want to steer well clear of the fallout in this sector in 10 years time, by moving into employment elsewhere long before that.2. Postal Workers. The future for postal workers, seasonal posta l workers and staffing agencies specializing in postal worker placements is unfortunately going to be difficult. Time has been called on this area of work with the DOL forecasting a 28 percent decline in jobs (that is 139,000 jobs) between 2012-22. The Oxford Martin study shows a 90 percent chance that postal worker jobs will be automated in the next 10 to 20 years so, the 20 year forecast is bleak. Workopolis also saw a decline in courier jobs, further underlining the difficulties in this area.3. Taxi, Bus and Truck Driver and Industrial Machine Operators. We can no longer bury our heads in the sand on this one. Google has a fleet of self-driving Lexus cars, and it has taken them just five years to create this from scratch, which means that professional driving jobs are sadly at risk and not at all future-proof. The Oxford Martin study has bus and taxi drivers and chauffeurs as having a 90 percent chance of computerization and a range of truck driving jobs showing between an 80 to 99 percent chance of the same. This is a high-impact area as there are around 3 million delivery truck drivers alone in the U.S. and growth is slower than average. The long-term security of jobs in this area cannot be guaranteed.4. Cashiers. This job is under threat, probably in the near future. Self-service technology exists now to pretty much automate this process, and its just public acceptance thats holding it back. But, when that hurdle is overcome, the flood gates could open, which is why the Oxford Martin study has this as having a 97 percent chance of computerization and the DOL has a forecast growth rate of just 3 percent, which is much lower than average. This is also a very high-impact area with nearly 3,500,000 Americans currently employed as cashiers. Workers in this area need to be developing a plan B, and fast.5. Security Guards. This one surprised me, really, as I thought we were a long way away from an Ed 209 style security, but the Oxford Martin Study sees securit y guard jobs as having an 84 percent chance of being computerized in the next 10 to 20 years. The DOL does not seem too concerned yet, as it is forecasting 12 percent growth in jobs over the next 10 years. However, this is a high-impact area with there being over 1 million security guard jobs in America so, workers in this area should keep a watching vigil. Now, its not all doom and gloom, as although many doors to jobs will be closing, many will be opening too, and if you want to know about these, please read my follow up article, 5 Careers That Will Be Booming in 10 Years Time.

They may work in a companys sales or marketing department, or their employer could be a call center or other third-party agency. The job responsibilities includeAnswering customer inquiriesLeading customers through the sales processOffering product or service descriptions, recommendations and quotesEntering orders and other dataFollowing up with customers after a purchaseGetting feedback via phone calls and customer satisfaction surveysTroubleshooting technical issuesResolving complaints, including issuing refundsResearching complex issues and collaborating with coworkers and managers for resolutionsWorking with other departments to improve products or servicesNote that customer service representatives are not telemarketers and do not make cold calls. What you need fo r the roleWhen hiring customer service representatives, companies look for candidates with killer communication skills. These specialists should be able to listen actively, express empathy and speak to anyone with ease. They also need an aptitude for quickly learning the industry they are in, and the ability to translate technical jargon into easy-to-understand language. Especially desirable are applicants who can do all of the above in English and another language.Customer service specialists must be comfortable with technology, including in-house tracking systems and telecommunications platforms. Such professionals should also be able to multitask simultaneously enter data, look at a screen, and listen to and speak with customers.Employers prefer candidates with at least one year of customer service experience, but this profession is highly accessible for entry-level workers, as most companies provide industry- and software-specific training. For most customer service roles, a high school diploma or equivalent is sufficient. A manager for a customer service department or call center may be required to have an associates or a bachelors degree in business administration or another relevant field.Whats more important, soft skills or hard skills?Computer hardware and software play a large role in customer service jobs, but those skills are relatively easy to teach. More difficult for employers to train for are superb interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.Employees with a high emotional quotient (EQ) - analogous to intelligence quotient (IQ) - can easily build rapport, express genuine empathy and understand the perspective of others. They listen actively and respond with warmth, making consumers feel valued and understood.Whats more, they are skilled at controlling their own emotions so that they deescalate a situation rather than make it worse. This is a key trait of excellent customer service specialists - who often find themselves speaking with unh appy consumers.During a job interview for these roles, hiring managers often focus on a candidates ability to solve problems and satisfy clients. Questions touch on how you deal with conflict and difficult people. Prepare for such interviews by thinking of specific situations, in both your personal and professionals worlds, where you successfully turned around a negative situation. Show off your people skills with friendly eye contact, positive body language and an engaging sense of humor.Whats the customer service specialist salary?Companies understand the power of excellent customer service, which is why certain businesses have stopped outsourcing this role to overseas providers and brought these jobs back to the U.S. Its difficult to communicate effectively with customers, especially by phone, if the representative doesnt have a firm grasp of idioms, regional accents or reference points. These and other factors lead to an above-average growth rate for customer service jobs.Accord ing to the 2019 OfficeTeam Salary Guide, the starting salary midpoint for a call center representative is $32,500. Customer service representatives are predicted to see a salary midpoint of $30,750. The salary midpoint for customer service managers is $45,250 and for call center managers, $51,250 add more to this figure for managers supervising more than 20 employees. Tags

Alexander Lyman Holley

Alexander Lyman Holley Alexander Lyman Holley Alexander Lyman Holley If Britains Sir Henry Bessemer was the father of the steel industry, then Alexander Lyman Holley was the chief architect and engineer of its rise in the U.S. During his brief but remarkably productive career, Holley brought Bessemers revolutionary steel manufacturing process to the states, improved upon it, and played a critical role in building a dozen of the nations most important Bessemer steel works. Holley was born in 1832 to a prominent Connecticut family with a long history in the iron business. His father, a former Connecticut governor, owned a cutlery factory where Holley gained his first exposure to industrial-scale manufacturing machinery. Although the familys wealth and connections (and his own robust intellect) positioned him for a distinguished career in law or politics, Holley was obsessed with machinery and the never-ending challenge of making things work better. While studying science and engineering at Brown University in Providence, RI, Holley picked up practical experience in locomotive engineering and design at several local companies. While still in college he published and patented his first invention, a steam-engine cut-off valve. His interest in railroad technology led to a close friendship with Zerah Colburn, a prominent rail engineer and author. Holley and Colburn traveled Europe by train, documenting the more advanced state of that continents rail systems on behalf of top U.S. railroad executives. Their treatises on the subject helped inspire investment in infrastructure upgrades back home. Holleys own literary interests took shape at this point, as he began a prolific side career as a journalist, technical illustrator, and publisher of journals on railway technologies. He wrote numerous reference works, technical books, and articles for a wide range of specialty and general interest publications, including the New York Times, where he served for 30 years as a technical correspondent. On his travels, Holley learned of Bessemers new steel-making process, in which compressed air was blown over molten raw iron to remove impurities, creating high-quality steel far less expensively than traditional methods. Technical issues and a lack of scientific understanding of the underlying metallurgical processes impeded the techniques wide acceptance in Britain, but Holleys knife-factory background and Ivy League training enabled him to perceive the exciting potential of the Bessemer process. In 1863, Holley purchased the rights to bring the Bessemer process to the U.S. Ten of his 15 lifetime patents were for improvements in the process that adapted it for conditions in the U.S. Soon, enormous Bessemer steel works took shape in cities like Troy, NY, and Harrisburg, PA. These and a dozen other steel towns across the industrial east fed the nations growing hunger for cheap, high-quality Bessemer steel. Holleys mills churned out steel for the bridges, railways, skyscrapers, and battleships that would make the U.S. the strongest economic power in the world. As with his journalism, Holleys professional endeavors were geared toward bringing people of different backgrounds together around key topics in science and engineering. His passion for research-driven progress in the practice of engineering led him to play a seminal role in the founding of the nations most important professional organizations aimed at education, standardization, and disciplinary excellence. He was considered a leading spirit in the founding of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and he chaired the first meeting of its founding members in 1880. His efforts helped to frame the intellectual parameters of the mechanical engineering profession and of the ASME organization itself. He played similar roles in the creation of the Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The break-neck pace of Holleys work eventually took its toll on his health. He died from peritonitis in 1882 at age 49. Less than a decade after his death, the three organizations with which he was most closely linked ASME, ASCE, and AIME joined forces to commission the 12 foot tall bronze and limestone Holley memorial, which still serves as a popular meeting spot in Manhattans Washington Square Park. Today, just as he did in life, Holley continues to bring people together. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. Holley's mills churned out steel for the bridges, railways, skyscrapers, and battleships that would make the U.S. the strongest economic power in the world.

4 Metrics Recruiters Love to See on Resumes

4 Metrics Recruiters Love to See on Resumes 4 Metrics Recruiters Love to See on Resumes If you want to make sure your resume catches a recruiter’s eye, there are few better ways to do so than by adding metrics to it. Why? For one, “we know that the human eye processes numbers faster than words,” career expert J.T. O’Donnell said in an interview with Glassdoor . But beyond that, they also “help me as a recruiter give context to the size and scope of the work that you did,” O’Donnell explains. In any given workday, though, there’s no shortage of specific numbers you could call out: the amount of emails you send, the amount of meetings you attend, the amount of projects you work on. So how do you know which metrics to include? We use the following four-step framework in our Job Seeker’s Toolkit to help you decide which numbers pack the most punch. Once you add the right metrics throughout your resume, don’t be surprised if the interview offers start rolling in! When deciding which metrics to include, it’s important to think about the key performance indicators, or KPIs, for your role. For example, salespeople are often assessed on how much revenue they drive, how many new clients they bring in, how many of their customers renew, etc. Whatever your role, think about the numbers that matter most for you: perhaps they’re ones that your boss brings up in weekly meetings, that you find in your performance review, or even that you see in the LinkedIn profiles of people with the same job title as you. Of these different metrics, think about which ones represent ways you added to the company and helped it grow. Depending on your role, this might include: In many cases, what you help your company reduce or eliminate can be just as important as what you add to it. In fact, certain roles focus their energy entirely on helping companies save or reduce in order to operate more efficiently. Think about whether you have a concrete way to measure how you’ve helped your company save or reduce the following: A great way to illustrate how much value you can add to a company is by showing them how many people you’ve previously helped. This doesn’t just have to be people outside of your company like users or clients; it can also include those within your company. Look through the following “people” metrics, and think about which ones might be relevant to your role: Understanding how frequently you performed certain tasks goes a long way in helping recruiters and hiring managers reading your resume understand how well-versed you are in a given area - often, the only difference between being a novice and being an expert is how much time you spend practicing. To help you figure out which tasks are the most important to highlight, take a look in the job description to see which key responsibilities and skills are listed. For example, a job seeker applying to a position that lists analytical skills as a requirement might want to describe how they pulled weekly site traffic reports using Google Analytics, while someone applying to a PR position that mentions media relations skills in the job description may want to describe how they pitched reporters on a daily basis. If you’re not used to adding numbers to your resume , it may feel a little bit strange at first. But don’t worry - you’ll get the hang of it in due time. Best of all, there’s a real chance it will improve your odds in a job search. “Numbers make a huge difference. If you can quantify what you did in any way, you should,” O’Donnell said.

What to Send in an Email After the Job Rejection

What to Send in an Email After the Job Rejection What to Send in an Email After the Job Rejection You thought you had the job all sealed up and then you get an email with some bad news. They decided to pursue other candidates, they went with someone who had better qualifications or the position was filled by someone else. So, what do you send in an email response to people you interviewed with several times? Yes, they rejected you and that stinks. But that does not mean you should be a bad sport or use this as a chance to be spiteful. Do not send an email with a link to a virus, or give them a piece of your mind. Here is what you should send instead in an email after the job rejection. Say thank you You are thanking them for the time and consideration. If they interview you and you had an enjoyable experience, thank them for the chance to get to meet. Leave a positive impression to show that you respond to bad news professionally. You see the good in a situation that is otherwise disappointing. Ask for feedback First things first, if they do not reply to your request for feedback do not be disappointed. The reality is we cannot always have nice things because the worst people scared others into thinking being helpful leads to trouble. You asked for feedback, but they may fear you are picking an argument. But you still should ask. Try asking questions that read harmless such as,“What key qualifications do you think I should work on that would have helped me?”. Try the statement, “If you have any feedback that you think would help me with my job search, it would be greatly appreciated.” Again, they may not reply and they may not be allowed to tell you why you were not chosen. Ultimately, you should not stop looking or improving because they cannot give you what you want. Offer to stay in touch If you had interviewed and enjoyed it, it would be great to follow up after a rejection with an offer to stay in touch. They did reject you now, but you never know if a job may pop up down the road that you would be a great fit for. Ask to be considered for future opportunities. In your email, you should give the fastest and most efficient way to be reached should they ever wish to reach out to you again. This is where it helps to have a great signature on your email. You can even connect with them on LinkedIn(which is a bit more personal). It's ok to be upset You can express that you are disappointed by the rejection, but use it as a lead-in to express gratitude for having had the chance to interview or be considered. Sample email rejection thread See the sample email chain below, which includes all tips mentioned above and the reply sent from the hiring manager (company and names withheld). Hiring manager rejection email Re: News regarding Your Position Dear *****, Last week someone who works (with us) and whose position is being eliminated applied for the same position. She (and I) only found out last week that her job was going to disappear. She’s been with us in a sales position for several years, and prior to that she had twenty years experience in (other sales). Under the circumstances we felt we had to offer her the job. I’m so sorry to have to tell you this. I thought you did a great job on your assignment and in the interview. I liked the step-by-step approach, the clear and thorough presentation, and your belief system. You certainly embody our company spirit. I know this is difficult, but I do hope you’ll stay connected. We want people like you to be part of our community. Regretfully, (Hiring Manager) Email response after rejection from job candidate Dear Hiring Manager, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and thank you for letting me know. I appreciate the position you are in and think it is great you hired in-house. This is indeed unfortunate news for me, yes, as I was looking forward to speaking with more of the staff. For now, please thank everyone for me that I had met during the interview process. I enjoyed the process greatly and learned a great deal that will help me in future job searches. If you have any feedback for me, I would love to hear anything you believe can help. Finally, it would be a pleasure to stay in touch. Please do keep me in mind if anything changes or new positions open up you think I may be a good fit for. Have a great week, Job Candidate Response from Hiring Manager Dear Job candidate, I absolutely will keep you in mind. I am genuinely sorry about this. It was completely unexpected. For what it’s worth, I also thought the work you submitted as part of the application process with your tribute to your wife was extremely moving and engaging. I really do wish you the best of luck. Deepest apologies, Hiring Manager What exactly happened in that email thread People stayed kind, appreciative, generous, respectful and supportive of each other. In the process, they connected and continued to stay in touch to this day. Every rejection should be seen as a building opportunity.

How to Know When You Are Ready to Play Live Music

How to Know When You Are Ready to Play Live Music How to Know When You Are Ready to Play Live Music So youve been plugging away, writing songs and lyrics, and you think youre ready for the next step. As a musician, playing live ranks pretty high on your list of to-dos - or, at least, it should. After all, theres nothing like the rush of the lights and adoring fans dancing to and enjoying your music. But how do you know its time to get out there on stage for the first time? Every musician has to have their first gig at some point, and it can be a little daunting to figure out the best time to make your debut and hit the stage. Not to mention the added stress of finding the right booker and venue for your first show. Some musicians often wait for the chance to come to them. Although its natural to want something to happen on its own, you do have to put some work in yourself - especially if you want the night to be a success, that is. So as you plug away, ask yourself whether you have these things in place: You Have Enough Material You should be able to showcase original material. That is everything youve written and perfected. How else is everyone going to know and appreciate your talent? But its not enough to just go out on stage and sing a few of your own songs. You need to be able to fill up at least one set. So how many songs are enough? That really depends on how long a set the booker/promoter is requesting. So never accept a gig for which you dont have the songs to play. You obviously dont want to say yes to the show and then frantically try to write the songs to fill it - you wont end up putting your best foot forward. If you cant fill at least a 30-minute set, you might want to stack a few more tracks before you start seeking out some live performance slots. Bottom line is ask how long you need to be on stage for your set. But just like any new band, your repertoire wont necessarily be filled with catalogues of your own music to choose from, so theres always an alternative you can use to fill up some time - the cover song(s). Putting your own spin and interpretation on a classic can really create some vibes. And its a great way to get comfortable in front of a crowd and earn some cash to support your musical ambitions. But remember, unless your ambition is to become strictly a cover artist/band, your real  first gig is when you play your songs for a group of people. Get Your Backup So youre a talented instrumentalist who can play every part of their own songs when recording. Excellent. Now, how are you going to do that live? If your music involves guitar, bass and drums, you simply cant play all of these by yourself. You need some players behind you. That doesnt mean you have to start a band if you really want to be a solo artist. What it does mean is you need to rally some fellow musicians together who are willing to learn your songs and jump  up on stage with you. They dont have to the Paul to your John, the Keith to your Mick or the Marr to your Morrissey, - they just have to be on board to help you get the job done. If things start moving along and gigging becomes a regular thing for you, then youll need to find musicians you can work with on a regular basis whether you officially become a band or they work with you as session musicians. Think you can get around this by playing an acoustic set? Think again. If youre being booked to deliver a full band performance, you need to deliver a full band performance. You Are Comfortable on Stage This one is a tricky one. The idea of playing a live show for the first time is bound to be intimidating, at least on some level, and if the notion of climbing on stage fills you with far too much apprehension, youre probably just not ready to tackle live music. Any seasoned live artist will tell you youre always going to be nervous before a show. And theres nothing wrong with having a little adrenalin from nervous energy drive you while youre playing. But dont underestimate how different playing to a room of people is from practicing on your own in your basement, garage studio or anything else youve done. Before you book your first gig, try playing a few parties, for friends, in front of the family or rocking out for your co-workers - anything you can do to get accustomed to playing your own music in front of people while maintaining your calm. Its also a good idea to practice talking between your songs. You dont need rehearsed stage banter, but you do need to be comfortable enough to say a few words to the crowd here and there without feeling faint. This kind of practice will help give you a realistic gauge as to what playing your show will be like, which will increase your confidence so you feel more free to focus on delivering a good set. Here are a few ideas to consider to chat with about the audience: Your inspiration for the song youre about to singYour background and how you got into musicYour favorite bandsWhy do you really like this cover? Getting used to this type of atmosphere in front of people you know before you land that first live gig is great because they can give you honest feedback on how you can improve. Going cold in front of strangers probably isnt such a good idea. After all, they may not be as kind - especially if theyre paying to see you and dont enjoy the experience. Practice Makes Perfect! Nothing will prepare you more for your first live gig like rehearsal. You should have a firm grip on all of the songs that make it into your set list, so youre free to relax and just let them come out on stage. The old adage that practice makes perfect is really true. All that repetition is good for your voice, mind and fingers because it helps you remember chords, keys and lyrics and youre less likely to fumble or make mistakes. But even if you mess up a note or two on stage, its not the end of the world. No one may even realize the vast majority of mistakes you make when you play live. However, that only comes from practice. And there you have it! If you can tick all of these boxes, now may be the time to go forth and book!

James Watt

James Watt James Watt James Watt The boy James Watt (1736 1819), future inventor of the steam engine, sits in the kitchen, his eyes and mind transfixed by the boiling kettle on the hearth. Not easy for history to ditch such images, but it probably has as much relation to truth as the one of George Washington hacking at the cherry tree. The tale comes from his cousin Marion Muirhead, recalling the young inventor many years later. Watt would turn his attention to steam, of course, and even use a kettle in his experiments, but not before he had paid a few dues as instrument maker and repairman. He seemed somewhat slated for the role, as his father sold mathematical and navigational instruments and his grandfather was a mathematician. Young Watt spent a year as an apprentice in Glasgow, mucking about with fishing tackle. Then he found another apprenticeship in London, where, in the services of John Morgan, he got his hands dirty with scientific equipment. James Watt workshop. Image: Science Museum/Science Society Picture Library The training primed him for a job back in Glasgow. When the university needed someone to fix a mass of astronomical instruments that had salted up on their way from Jamaica, they brought Watt on as Mathematical Instrument Maker to the University. Practically, it meant he was a handyman for the Universitys elite. For Professor Joseph black, obsessed with the transference of heat, he made a condensing syringe and a steam digester. For natural philosopher John Anderson he made pulleys, pumps, and air guns. Meanwhile, Watt began creating his own businesses serving Glasgows industry. Soon he had a staff helping him repair and build all kinds of equipment, including scales, Hadleys quadrants, compasses and musical instruments. The later were to be produced by his staff, but were not to be played. In fact, he hired one John Southern on the condition that he would give up music. Surrounded as he was by men of science, some of their penchant for investigation and forward dreaming would rub off on the instrument maker. At the urging of chemistry professor John Robinson, who had a head full of steam-powered carriages, he began his own exploration of steam. At the time the only steam engines put to any industrial use were the Newcomen engines used to pump water out of mines. The mechanics of these primitive machines were simple: steam filled up a cylinder, and then cold water was injected into it to make the steam condense. This created a vacuum and pulled the piston back down. It was the draw of the vacuum that really powered the enginethey werent so much steam engines as condenser engines. Watt was a man who couldnt stand waste. Even more irritating to him than the hours an employee might throw away sawing on a fiddle was the heat extinguishedand the coal wastedwhen the steam of a Newcomen engine was doused with water. So Watt used, finally, that kettle, with a glass tube to pipe steam into other vessels to begin his study of the qualities and behavior of steam. Eventually he developed an engine with a cylinder surrounded by wood, with steam in-betweenthe steam jacket. The condensing of the steam would happen elsewhere, in his separate condenser. Now it was the entering steam that powered the pistonand it could be argued, the steam engine was born. Watt received his patent for the engine in 1769, but afraid that it was not ready to be put to work he turned to other pursuits for his livelihood. He spent some years building canals, and 15 years trying to extract alkali from seawater. It was a forward-thinking buckle maker, Matthew Boulton, who would supply the funds and the intellectual fuel to get Watt back at steam. The only problem was that the patent for his engine was about to run out. Boulton and other well-connected friends used every ounce of political power to extend the patent. Illustration of the Watt engine. In 1776 a Watt engine made its first appearance and soon they were populating the mines of Cornwall. More interested in RD than constructing engines, Boulton and Watt charged their clients royalties based on the amount of coal they saved by not using a Newcomen engine. In the ensuing years Watt would improve his engine with several key developments. Making one that could push and pull was one big step. Putting two together with a crank to make rotary power was another. The idea for the crank however, was, stolen, in all likelihood, by an employee, and patented before Watt could get to it. Rather than pay to use an idea he felt he should have rightly owned, Watt came up with a variety of alternative methods for converting up-and-down power to rotary. His sun and planet gears proved the most effective. Now Boulton and Watt were prepared to open up their market to industries beyond mining. Having been stung by crank theft and other patent infringements, the pair spent a great deal of their time in the next decades litigating and sending spies to investigate the engines of mines everywhere. Afraid of using high-pressure steamsoon to be the new wave of steam powerWatt declared, in 1785, that he would leave the advancement of technology to younger men, who have neither money nor character to lose. Having money to lose himself, though, he did not quite leave his youngers alone. He used all his political pull to sink the patents of those with superior engines. And he scoffed at those who wanted to put a steam engine on ships as well as those who thought to put it on a locomotive. While these advancements were being pursued he spent his time studying the medical benefits of various gases, extolling the powerful anti spasmodic powers of carbon monoxide. With Boulton he even developed a bellows with a mouthpiece to deliver such tonics. Though undoubtedly Watts engine hurried along the industrial revolution, it was eventually replaced with more advanced engines. And though the kettle still has its place in every home, steam power is somewhat on the wane. Watts chief contribution to our world may be his name, which replaced his own term for energy, good old horsepower. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. Even more irritating to him than the hours an employee might throw away sawing on a fiddle was the heat extinguished- and the coal wasted- when the steam of a Newcomen Engine was doused with water.
